Your wardrobe is your creative space, it is your most valuable style tool. Every single centimetre needs to be organised efficiently to allow you to think clearly and breathe freely through your dressing regime. Remove the clutter and start arranging the spaces to
deliver you effortless outfitting.
Dressing begins at the place where you put together your outfits. Maintaining an orderly dressing environment that is well stocked to cater for your life is a necessary process as it is not possible to execute your best self without a clean and uncluttered wardrobe. Cleaning out your wardrobe will trigger the big change and is a shortcut you to your end goal.
As you lift the weight away, the newer, lighter you will move through the
world with a clear vision of yourself and a style that emulates that vision.
Let the overhaul begin.
Clean Out
Take a breath and take every single item out of your wardrobe. All that remains will be an empty shell.
Edit your collection
Be ruthless. Create a pile for the pieces you quickly identify as absolutely no. Remove the nos.
Tick your boxes
Does the item make my body look its best right now?
Does the item represent my taste?
Does the item work for what I am doing with my time?
You should also ask yourself:
Can the item make at least three outfits with other items in my wardrobe? If you can't tick all of these boxes, the item shouldn't be part of your collection. Everything inside the new wardrobe will be part of your 'best you' collection.
Organise your space
Build your best wardrobe ever and turn your overgrown forest into a system formed with precision and care; a catalogued fashion playground. I run my wardrobe like a tight ship. Every single item is visible and hung neatly in its colour code. The folded stacks sit in tidy piles arranged from dark to light and shoes are categorised from sneakers, to flats, to wedges, to heels. It's a streamlined process which allows me to pull looks together with ease and at the same time identify any gaps.
All your hangers need to be exactly the same shape so that garments hang neatly and don't overlap other garments.
Footwear needs to be placed onto shelves. Every woman needs shoe shelving to protect her footwear from being thrown into a pile!
Hang garment in categories and in colour order from dark to light.
Rearrange your space
Creating an organized wardrobe layout can be an elaborate exercise or
a very simple one. I like to think of a wardrobe as a fashion boutique. Working with the space you have and subject to your budget, consider the following:
Break the spaces into zones for your lifestyle. Rework your entire floor-plan to ensure all your pieces are as visible as possible. You need to be able to see every single item.
And yes every wardrobe needs a full-length mirror. You need to be able to see
your head-to-toe reflection. If possible, position a second mirror in
a way that allows you to see a clear visual of your back. The mirror
should sit under true lighting.
Return your edited collection
Only put back into the wardrobe the pieces that tick all of your boxes. Not much left? You might be feeling a bit empty. Cheer yourself up by selling the old and put the cash towards your fresh new collection - the online market for second-hand clothes is very active. Or donate those items to your local charity. There might be some items that you can't bare to part with. That's okay, just pop those items into a box and keep that box away from your
creative space. This avoids cluttering the pieces that you are keeping.
Make a list
Take out a pen and paper and make a list of the items you need immediately
to fill your gaps. The first items on the list should be your core wardrobe
items (read my building a core wardrobe blog). Continue to make lists of
items to shop for as occasions arise to buy new pieces.
Go Shopping!
Shop for your needs first. Make sure your wardrobe caters adequately for all the occasions you need to be dressed for. Enjoy building upon your collection at your leisure.
